Situated in western Bhutan by Gasa to the North, Thimphu to the west and Wangduephodrang to the east and south. Puankha is located at an altitude ranging from 1100-2500m above sea level. Until 1955, Punakha served as the winter capital of Bhutan.
Chimi Lhakhang: It is located 10 Kilometers from Punakha near a village called Sopsokha from where a 20-minute walk along muddy and dusty path through agricultural field. Chimi Lhakhang is made popular by the most revered figure “The Devine Madman” who carried the thunderbolt of wisdom in the shape of a Phallus.
Khamsum Yulley Monastery: Unquestionably a unique Buddhist monastery, Khamsum Yulley is located on the ledge of Punakha valley. It is regarded as the most holy monastery in Vajrayana Buddhism. It was constructed under the treasure revealer’s direction. Her Majesty Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuk is the driving force behind the creation of the Khamsum Yulley Lhakhang. It was primarily constructed as a gift to His Majesty and for the welfare of all Bhutanese.
